Melinda Karp Is the Senior Director of Member Experience Innovation at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. Ms. Karp and her team, in partnership with leaders throughout the company, are working to develop and implement a comprehensive, strategic and market-leading approach to member engagement that leverages data, information and technology to meet BCBSMA members’ needs, inform their health care decisions, and improve their experiences with the plan and the delivery system.    

Prior to joining BCBSMA in April 2013, Ms Karp spent 13 years as part of the core leadership team at the Massachusetts Health Quality Partners (MHQP), where she was Director of Strategic Planning and Business Development.  There she directed the ongoing development of MHQP’s strategic roadmap for core business activities and new programmatic opportunities to effectively leverage MHQP core competencies and forward MHQP’s mission. She led MHQP’s consumer and community engagement strategy and directed MHQP's nationally recognized patient experience measurement effort since its inception in 2000. Among her many achievements at MHQP, Melinda led the organization’s innovative work in 2005 to develop and implement statewide measurement of patient experiences with individual primary care physicians and their practices.   With that work, Massachusetts became the first state to publicly report patients’ experiences with physician practices for every adult and pediatric practice statewide.  

Ms. Karp has over 20 years of experience in directing health care quality improvement and performance measurement activities in both applied and research settings. She brings enormous knowledge and experience in the use of performance measurement for patient and family engagement and to drive performance improvement.  

Ms. Karp has been engaged in numerous national activities and has served on several national advisory boards focused on measuring and reporting patient care experiences and improving the patient-centered delivery of care. Prior to joining MHQP, Ms. Karp was employed by Harvard Pilgrim Health Care for 7 years, where she responsible for a broad set of provider-facing performance incentive and improvement programs. 

Ms. Karp earned a Master of Business Administration degree in Health Care Management from Boston University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Duke University.
